Race report - Saturday series 1 & 2

Saturday saw the first2 race of the HHYC North Sails Summer Saturday Series with a beautiful sunnyday and a nice 8 knot sea breeze in Port Shelter, summer must be on its way!All of the Magic’s went out 3 up and with the exception of 1 all of the helms madethe most of the wind and joined their crew on the wire!

The races started withall fleets on the same start line so there was plenty of action with all 24boats trying to get off as best as possible. The boats which made it to thecommittee boat had the best start as they were lifted inside the fleet on theway up to the top mark. At the rounding it was Red Herring that had the bestfirst beat followed by Merlin, Fly By Wire, Sidewinder, Longtze Belle, R2B2 andMonsoon. At the top of the fleet Steve was pushing Jens hard with the otherboats doing what they could to hold on. On the last lap the wind was shiftingall over the place and by the time the boats went around the top mark for thelast time the wind had shifted 30 degrees to the right and started to fill in.R2B2 made the most of this and gybed at the mark to head in to the newpressure. Longtze Belle followed and also made up ground on the rest of thefleet. At the finish R2 managed to pip Red Herring by 7 seconds to take thewin, followed by Merlin, Fly by Wire, Longtze Belle, Sidewinder and Monsoon.

The wind continued tofill in from the right hand side of port shelter and by the start of the 2ndrace there was a steady 10 knots from the South West. There was some confusionabout what the starting flags on the back of the committee boat meant, maybe asign to pick up some sailing instructions from the club house. With the windclocking right all of the time the committee boat end of the line was favoured.Merlin, Longtze Belle and Sidewinder did a good job to place them selves at theright end of the line and block some of the bigger boats out to make a nearperfect start. With the breeze in Sidewinder led the fleet to the top markfollowed by Merlin and Longtze Belle. In all of the pre-start confusion Fly ByWire, R2B2 and Monsoon were left chasing the fleet up the beat. All of theboats gybed at the top mark to take advantage of the pressure on the right handside of the course. Merlin made a break to get away by gybing back right againwith Sidewinder covering. At the bottom mark Longtze Belle came in with anoverlap to take the lead from Sidewinder and Merlin chasing. All of the boatstacked away from the bottom mark to head to the left of the course. Sidewindertacked back again in a search for more pressure and tried to gain an advantageover the Longtze and around the top mark it had paid off. Going down the runall boats stayed right until they hit the layline. Sidewinder gybed first andLongtze Belle gybed just inside them and used their downwind speed advantage tosoak over the top of the Magic and get them at the finish by a mere 6 seconds.Merlin came in 3rd with Fly by Wire, R2B2 and Monsoon bringing upthe rear.

It was a great daysailing with 2 very close finishes in both of the races, as well as being agreat opportunity to race with 25 boats on the start line! Next weekend is race2 and 3 of the typhoon series with 2 geometric courses. If the last TS race wasanything we should have 20+ boats on the start line again and without otherAsian events drawing people away there is no excuse not to get boats out on therace course. If you need crew, or you are looking for a ride contact Joyce.

Typhoon series race 1 - race report

Sunday’s forecast was forvery little wind and the chance of rain so not the best start to the Nautica Typhoonseries 2009. The start was moved out of Port Shelter to the area North of TrioIsland to look for the better breeze. The sail out was a little longer thanmost people expected and as a result some of the boats were ‘slightly’ late forthe start! When the boats made it out to the start they were greeted by asoothing 4 – 5 knots which built to a fresh 8 – 9 knots as the day progressed, definitely more than was expected!

At the start JamieMcWilliam on Longtze Belle, pulled off a perfect port tack flier at the pin tocross the fleet and reach the top mark first, second around the mark was the 2ndLongtze Exocet, followed by R2B2 then Tornado and Steve, with the late starterschasing hard to make up the time that they lost.

The next leg was up toBluff and around the back of the Island to Trio. In the lee of the island therewere plenty of holes to dodge and as the boats emerged, Jamie was still out infront with both R2B2 and Tornado managing to pass Exocet who was stuck doingcircles in search for breeze. From Bluff to Trio was a 2 sail reach with thekites going up at Trio for a tight reach to Bay. Around Bay it was a fetch toTable before running to the finish at Little Palm beach. Unfortunately afterthe start the wind had shifted right so the course was predominantly reachinglegs, without many overtaking lanes. So Jamie was 1st on the waterwith R2B2 2nd, Tornado 3rd, Exocet 4th andSteve leading the other Magics on the water. Some boats did not have validratings so their results did not stand. The final corrected results were:Longtze Belle 1st, R2B2 2nd, Exocet 3rd, Merlin 4th,Fly By Wire 5th and Sidewinder 6th.

This coming Saturdayis the 1st race of the North Sails Summer Saturday Series at HebeHaven (http://www.hhyc.org.hk/Photo%20Gallery/Yachting/NSSSS%202009-1%20NOR%20&%20SIs%20V2.pdf).There has been much interest in the fleet about racing this series so it willbe good to see more boats out on the water than we have seen recently! Theweather for the working week is not looking great but with some sun forecast onSaturday it will be a good opportunity to dust off the sun screen and top upthe tan! HHYC have said that if there are enough boats entered, they will runan SBR division. It’s up to us to turn out in numbers

Sunday 14thJune (just under 2 weeks) is race 2 and 3 of the Nautica Typhoon series (http://www.hhyc.org.hk/ya_racing_detail.aspx?id=238).2 geometric courses are planned for the day and with everyone back fromextravagant trips to Koh Samui etc it will be an even greater weekend racing!
